Chapter Forty-Five: Scent

“Here we are!” Bert said brightly, as Thora, Theo, Bruce and himself appeared directly outside of the library. Bruce clutched at his stomach, looking ready to heave. Even the steadfast and iron-willed Thora appeared unnerved by the experience of travelling by vampire magic.

“I never want to do that again,” he muttered. As soon as Bert had clicked his fingers and willed them towards Grantmere University library, it had felt similar to Weaving, except that he had been unable to see anything. Coils of thick smoke had manifested out of thin air and gathered into one pitch-black screen, obscuring his vision. For all he had known, Bert might have been taking them to Timbuktu, let alone the library. That, coupled with the sensation of being dragged along very fast, with no sense of touch, sight or hearing to guide him, had been singularly unpleasant.

Thora smoothed down a few flyaway strands of her hair and tucked her T-shirt neatly into her jeans. “’Felt like I was being pulled forward by a rampaging mountain troll,” Bruce said. Theo grinned impishly. A thought occurred to Bruce. He turned towards Bert, his expression unexpectedly accusatory.

“Hang on- didn’t you say only last night that you had been to Valvayne Manor? Did you know about his sister, and deliberately not tell us?”

“Well, yes. I visited her once, to try and convince her into persuading Virgil to leave my sister alone. It did no good, and you never asked about her last night, so I assumed you already knew about her.”

Bruce groaned. “What is she like? Is she a threat?”

Bert looked uncomfortable. He sighed, and Bruce could still smell the alcohol on his breath.

“It’s difficult to explain…no, honestly it is!” he said hurriedly, seeing Bruce’s sceptical face. “She’s been helping her brother by following Rowan around and spying on her, but she’s been forced to because…”

“Come on Thora, we don’t have time for this prat. We need to warn Rowan and Camille,” Bruce said, cutting him off. He glanced at Bert, and said quietly, “’Just when I began to trust you, as well.”

Bert had the decency to look embarrassed, and opened his mouth to speak, but something had clearly caught Thora’s eye, distracting him. She looked towards the blank tarmac and brick walls of the staff car park, gazing out upon the rows of neat, shiny bonnets.

“Look,” she said, shielding her eyes with her hand, “I think I see something- its Camille’s car, but- that’s odd- the door’s open. They might be over there- quick!”

She dashed off, the flat soles of her boots flying over the pavement.

Theo and Bert watched as Bruce and Thora ran towards the car park without another word. Theo turned towards Bert, his expression bemused.

“Why do they always have to run everywhere?” he said.

“’Beats me,” replied Bert, shrugging. “Let’s leave them to it. Come on, we can go to my pad in Belgravia- we’ve both had too much to drink, and you need somewhere to sleep it off.”

“I’m fine,” protested Theo, attempting to retie his shoelace and nearly tripping over himself.
